The Only Court Where the Judge Is the Criminal Himself!

Reflecting upon the reality that one day, everything we have done — both good and evil — will be unveiled before our eyes in the Divine Court of Justice, can keep alive within us the awareness of eternal life and the sense of moral accountability.

Hawzah News Agency | Imam Ali, peace be upon him, says in Nahj al‑Balāghah, Wisdom No. 8:

«أَعْمَالُ الْعِبَادِ فِی عَاجِلِهِمْ نُصْبُ أَعْیُنِهِمْ فِی [آجِلِهِمْ] آجَالِهِمْ.»

“The deeds of human beings in this fleeting world will be placed before their eyes in the everlasting world.”

Explanation:

Indeed, to live righteously, to remain steadfast upon the Straight Path, and not to deviate from the way of truth — this saying of the Imam is sufficient for us.

To remember that one day every deed we have committed — good or bad — will be shown before our very eyes in the Divine Court of Justice, can awaken within us a living awareness of the eternal life that awaits us.

What makes this reflection even more profound is the Qur’anic declaration that on the Day of Resurrection, judgment will be entrusted to the human being himself:

«اقْرَأْ کِتَابَکَ کَفَیٰ بِنَفْسِکَ الْیَوْمَ عَلَیْکَ حَسِیبًا.»

“Read your book; today your own soul is sufficient to call you to account.” (Surah al‑Isrāʾ, 17:14)

According to the words of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, and the holy verse above, the Divine Court of Justice on the Day of Judgment is the only court in which the sinner himself is the judge. On that Day, there will be no escape, for all deeds will be laid bare before one’s eyes. Then, man will judge himself — and how unbearable will be the shame in the presence of Divine Justice.

What Should We Do?

We must constantly examine and evaluate our deeds so that we may be spared the shame of the Day of Resurrection — that moment when we stand before Almighty God. Although a sense of shame exists even here in this world, the nature of worldly life makes us neglectful and blinds us to reality. But in the Hereafter, in the Court of Judgment, the story will unfold differently.

Imam Ali, peace be upon him, answers the question “What should we do?” in these words:

«حَاسِبُوا أَنْفُسَکُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُحَاسَبُوا وَ وَازِنُوهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تُوَازَنُوا.»

“Bring yourselves to account before you are taken to account; and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you (lest your scale of deeds be found empty and light).” (Ghurar al-hikam, v.1, p. 352)
